TULANE HEAD COACH Rick Jones
Overall thoughts on the game
"They played great defense for two days but their numbers coming in were bad defensively. We talked about in pregame. I didn't know if they could sustain. We needed to continue to put pressure on their defense, see if we could force some things, and today we were able to do that."
On the performance of freshman third baseman Rob Segedin
"Having the day off helped him relax. He pressed too much on Friday night and tried to push it a little too much. He didn't get a lot of quality swings because he swung at some bad pitches early in the count. All I did was I told him yesterday, `I'm going to give you the day off to relax, catch your breath and we'll use you late if we need you,' which I did. Today, I think he benefited from that."
On the performance of freshman pitcher Robby Broach
"He made some pitches today. Robby realizes that he needs to cut down on his walks but that is a thing we can't defense. He understands that. It's just an execution thing. But he also pitched out of them, and that's the big thing. So there are some positives to draw from and something to work on there."
On what Tulane takes from the pre-conference portion of its schedule
"We're always looking for ways to improve. Going in, we knew we were facing some pretty tough non-conference early season. We're 16-6 right now, and I think I would have probably signed that contract knowing who we were going to play. We still have one more game to go before we get to conference play, but I think there is more in this ballclub. Once we get more guys on track and we stay healthy, I think this club can be a very special team.
"It's unique in that this is the newest club I've had to deal with since 1995 as far as personnel. You can't have a lot of reference when you're doing that. I have a lot of reference with one play and not somebody else. I don't want to use any names there, but we're trying to get those points of reference and see how guys handle themselves over a period of time and how guys handle things with more at-bats or less."
FRESHMAN PITCHER Robby Broach
On his performance today on the mound
"Today, I felt my form was okay. I had less pitches today than I had last week. I had five walks today. I was pretty disappointing in that. Our team gave really good effort , we played really good defense and we got the job done because we won."
On the play of the Tulane defense
"The defense has done real well. When guys get on and we make pitches to get ground balls, and they make the plays. When you have that behind you, it gives you more confidence to pitch."
SACRED HEART HEAD COACH NICK GIAQUINTO
On his team's performance on Sunday
"We didn't get off to a good start, a good middle or a good finish. It was one of those days. It's a huge disappointment. As a young team, we're trying to establish a little consistency in our play and we didn't do that today. We knew it was important to come out and battle, and we didn't get the effort."
On the performance of Tulane's pitchers throughout the weekend
"We just couldn't get anything going. You have to tip your hat to their pitching staff and their solid defense all weekend."
On what Sacred Heart takes out of the weekend
"Positively, we try and look at the first couple of games - especially game two - where we hung in there a little bit. I think we had a couple of decent pitching performances. As conference comes along, those guys have gotten more innings, they'll be able to go a little longer, and maybe we'll be able to hang on a little longer. I think we had a couple of decent pitching performance and played solid defense with the exception of today. We just have to come up with some hits with runners in scoring position."
