Quotes Following Baseball's 8-1 Victory Over Nicholls State

April 8, 2008

Recap |  Final Stats

TULANE HEAD COACH Rick Jones

Overall thoughts on the game
"They got 24 outs and I didn't think we swung the bats very well. Seth had the big hit, obviously. The bright spot was we played very well defensively, especially in the infield. Scelfo had a great night defensively, Seth played really well defensively, so did Segedin and Sam made some nice plays at first. Matt Petiton, Josh Zeid and a dominant Rob Segedin in the ninth were really exciting to see. You're going to see Rob Segedin pitch more. I can tell you that. All three of those guys will. Matt Petiton was very good for four innings."

On drawing a season-high 13 walks
"We did a good job of that and not swinging at a lot of bad pitches, but five hits is not acceptable. We really rolled over a lot of breaking balls in the dirt."

On if he feels his team is ready for the remaining four games this week at UNO and at Houston
"We don't have any choice. We're going to play either way. We're going to have to play very well. These next four games are going to have a lot to do with the rest of our season so we need to be ready to play."

JUNIOR MIDDLE INFIELDER Seth Henry

On the Green Wave drawing a season-best 13 walks
"They weren't really throwing too many strikes, so we did a good job of taking our walks. But we definitely have to do a better job with runners in scoring position. We still left a lot of people on with two outs.

On his fourth-inning grand slam
"He walked Scelfo on four pitches, so I knew he was going to try and get ahead early in the count. I was looking fastball, something up that I could drive. He left it over the middle and I drove it."

On if it was tough to hit with Nicholls State pitchers walking 13 on the night
"It does make it a little hard. They were somewhat effectively wild. It's hurts your concentration because they were all over the place, but we just have to stay focused."

NICHOLLS STATE HEAD COACH CHIP DURHAM

On NSU pitchers issuing 13 walks on the day
"Including hit batters, we had 15 free passes and six of them scored. When you go back to the first three innings, we left four runners in scoring position. Against good teams like this, you have to take advantage of those situations. You can't get a timely hit every time, but if we get a timely hit maybe one or two times out of there and score a couple early, and we don't walk as many guys, you never know."

On what the free passes did to his team
"I am very disappointed in our pitching staff. We didn't have the offense. We got on base and got in scoring position early, but overall, I'm very disappointed in our pitching staff. You don't give yourself a chance to win when you pitch like that."

On the grand slam in the bottom of the fourth
"I think they scored a run earlier in the inning, and then came the grand slam. But if you look at it, four of those (six) runs were walks. If we don't have the walks, it's a solo home run and it's a 1-1 ballgame. We're not an explosive offense and if we're going to win, we have to give ours guys a chance to win late. Our pitchers didn't do that today."
