TULANE HEAD COACH Rick Jones
Overall thoughts on the game
"It was a very winnable ballgame, but we had to play better in a couple of phases. We gave up five hits, but three of them were homers. We walked seven and had a couple of errors. There was too much unearned. We didn't make them earn it enough today. It's as simple as that."
On the performance of both teams' bullpens
"The submariner (Collin Cargill) pitched well when he had to and made some good pitches. He was really the difference. He came out of the bullpen and shut us down during the middle innings. We didn't pitch as well out of the bullpen and they were able to get back in it. We had a three-run lead, and that's why you have to play nine innings. I liked our run there at the end off their closer (Tyler Conn), but he has the numbers he's got because he makes pitches when he has to. Seth had a great swing at 2-0, but he made him a great pitch there."
On winning three out of four games this week
"It's great to play .750 baseball, but the problem is we've had too many weeks where we haven't played .750 baseball. At 27-12-1, our record is good. But we're still bunched up in the league and we had a chance to stretch it today. That's the disappointing thing so that puts more emphasis on next week."
SOUTHERN MISS HEAD COACH CORKY PALMER
On his team's performance on Sunday
"I'd rather get an ugly win than a pretty loss. This is a tough place to play and this may have broken some of the ice. But it was ugly."
On salvaging game three of the weekend series
"I talk to the team all the time (and tell them), `No matter who you're playing, don't get swept.' This was a big swing to go 6-6 instead of 5-7."
On the three home runs
"That's the reason we won. We hit some home runs. We just had some problems defensively. It's been tough down here for a few years. This is a big win. We didn't win the series, but that breaks a little bit of the ice with our program being able to come down here and win."
