Quotes Following Baseball's 9-8 Tuesday Night Loss To UNO

May 6, 2008

Recap |  Final Stats

TULANE HEAD COACH Rick Jones

Overall thoughts on tonight's game
"You've got to play better against a great UNO team if you're going to win a game like tonight. We didn't play very well, and they played better than us. We had four errors, walked six (and an intentional walk), we hit a batter and we didn't have as many competitive at-bats in key situations - especially late. It's a very disappointing loss, and one that we're going to have to rebound from quickly."

On free passes hurting Tulane in the ballgame
"You can't allow walks and errors to a team that hits as well as they do and not expect them to hurt you, and it did tonight for us."

On the two-run error in the fifth
"That was one of those things that just happen. Of course it hurt. And they got the three-run homer. We had nobody out and then had two walks and the three-run homer. Walks and errors will get you beat, especially against a team as dangerous offensively as they are. Tonight, we just didn't play a complete game at all."

UNO HEAD COACH TOM WALTER

Overall thoughts on the game
"The good part about this club lately is we're finding ways to win. We didn't play our best baseball tonight, but we didn't panic. We made the plays defensively late in the game, and I thought our experience really showed itself tonight."

On the turning point of the ballgame
"I thought Randy Verdin was the MVP for us tonight. He really settled us down. We were hoping to get two innings out of him tonight, but we had to extend him since David did not have his best stuff. He was huge for us."

On pitching Whalen in the seventh
"Today was Stephen Whalen's bullpen day, so we told him to hold off and throw it during the game in case we needed him. We did not want to throw O'Shea more than two innings tonight with the games we have this weekend. Those were two big outs Stephen got for us."

On the Privateers winning their 10th in a row
"Early in the year, when we didn't play our best, we'd still have a chance to win but we didn't get it done. Now we're starting to win those games, and that's the sign of a good team."
