Pirates Snap Green Wave's 10-game Win Streak, 76-68

Feb. 17, 2007

Box Score

GREENVILLE, N.C. - The Tulane women's basketball team erased an 11-point deficit, but 19 points from D'Aundra Henry wasn't enough as the East Carolina Pirates snapped the Green Wave's win streak at 10, 76-68, Saturday at Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum on the Pirates' Senior Day.

Tulane Green Wave (22-5, 11-3 Conference USA) also received 13 points from junior forward Alenda Brown and 12 points from junior forward Jennifer Sands.

East Carolina Pirates (14-13, 9-5 C-USA) held Tulane to 3-for-19 from three-point range and connected on 5-of-12 themselves. The Pirates, shooting .636 percent from the free throw line entering the game, hit 27-of-33 free throws.

Jasmine Young's jumper with one minute left provided the dagger and she hit three of four free throws in the final minute to seal the victory. She finished with a game-high 22 points.

Tulane, receiving votes in both the AP top 25 and the ESPN/USA Today Coaches' Poll, trailed for most of the game. The Wave's win streak was the second-longest in school history, and the longest road win streak against conference opponents.

Sophomore point guard Ashley Langford dished out eight assists to set a new Tulane single season record for assists (172) breaking her own record of last season (171).

The Pirates opened up to an 11-5 lead before a triple from the corner by Nikki Luckhurst. The Wave tied the game on a back-door cut and lay-up from Henry. But ECU answered with a 9-0 run to take a 22-13 lead with 7:13 to go in the first.

ECU led by as many 11 points in the first half, but Ashley Langford converted an and-one in transition to cut the margin to 35-29 at the break. The Pirates controlled the boards, 22-15 in the first half, including eight offensive rebounds. Both teams shot 39 percent in the first half.

The Green Wave cut trimmed the margin until a lay-up from Montagnino tied the game at 40-40. ECU picked up its points from the free throw line, until a three-pointer from Jessica Slack gave the Pirates a seven-point lead.

Tulane answered again, with an `and-one' from Sasha Staidum, a jumper from Sands, and a pair of throws from Henry to tie the game.

Cherie Mills hit a jumper in the paint for a 68-61 lead with 2:50 to go. After a jumper by Jasmine Young, Luckhurst stroked a three to cut the margin to three, but ECU calmly hit its free throws the rest of the way.

With 19 points, Henry moves within 24 points of 1,000 for her career. She can become the 18th member of Tulane's 1,000 point club (joining Jami Montagnino) this season.

Tulane returns home for its final regular season games of the year Thursday and Saturday. The Wave plays SMU on Thursday at 7 p.m. and will play host to Tulsa on Saturday on Senior Day in a double-header with the men's team. The Tulane men face Southern Miss at 3 p.m. CT live on CSTV with the Green Wave women taking on Tulsa approximately 35 minutes after the first game. The women's game will be aired tape-delay on CSTV.
