Langford's Log: Holiday Hoops
Jan. 1, 2007 We have grown accustomed to traveling as a result of a string of away games, not to mention a victorious Thanksgiving Tournament at Florida International University and a key win over Winthrop University right before Christmas break. There were times that I barely unpacked my suitcases before I was packing again for another road game. Due to the traveling, the team has become an extended family. Although we have traveled a lot during the first semester we did have a week off from games to focus on final exams. The finals break has its advantages and disadvantages. Personally, I like having the break from games so that I can focus on my studies and also work on improving my game and fine tuning some fundamentals. The break also gives us a chance to rest our bodies and helps with any injuries that anyone has suffered during the season. The finals break does not excuse us from practice, which is still held and is intense. Sometimes players get restless because we are not used to only practicing with no close games in sight. The holidays are probably the hardest to get through, because everyone wants to be with their family. I do not consider myself homesick, but during the holidays especially Christmas, I fit the definition. This year we played two games before we were released for Christmas break, and it was very hectic. After our home game on December 20th everyone had to move out of their current dorm and relocate to another dorm because the dorms close for winter break. The next day we left for South Carolina to play Winthrop on the 22nd, and many players had to pack for their trip home because we were able to go home after the Winthrop game. In the midst of all that I still managed to get Christmas gifts and deal with the crowds of people in the mall. After Christmas break, everyone was focused and ready to win the Tulane DoubleTree Classic. We beat Fordham and University of Texas-Arlington, in a very competitive tournament. The championship game came down to the wire.
Now we open up Conference USA play at UTEP and then have our first home Conference Weekend. I hope to see all of the GREEN WAVE FANS THERE! Roll Wave, Ashley |
