The Thrill of Victory, The Stiffness of My Neck

Sept. 5, 2007

Miller's Moments Archive

The first away tournament is always an exciting experience, no matter what year you are. Of course, travel in general is exciting. But put travel and volleyball together in one weekend, and you're in for a great trip. Oh, and it also helps if you win... which we did.

There was an extra experience for me last weekend, though. On Thursday morning, I woke up and found that I could not rotate my head to the left or back without a feeling a "piercing point of pain," as I so deemed it to our wonderful trainer, Becky Ban.

She determined that it was simply a neck spasm, but was unable to do much before our first practice, so I had to get through a full run-through without looking up or turning to the left. Let's just say it was interesting and I almost laughed at myself a few times, but bit my lip before the coaches got upset with me for not being focused.

The whole weekend the team teased me good naturedly, calling me Lefty or constantly tapping me on my left shoulder. Other than that odd occurrence for me, though, this past trip to Sam Houston State was a great trip. Everyone got playing time, and we dominated with or without our starters in. Props to the team.

One thing that I have decided so far while doing this blog thing is that it is very hard to convey to others outside of the volleyball world what is going on every day. I really don't want to bore you with talks about our practices and drills and other stuff like that, so I try to make it interesting by talking about other things, like my odd injury. Although I'm not sure that I can call it an injury because to be honest, I have no idea how it happened. Guess I learned what it means to wake up on the wrong side of the bed.
